What is Wandering Cinema?
Immersive Creativity: A Cinematic Retreat
This one-week program is a unique opportunity for filmmakers to unlock their creativity. This is not a production workshop, but a time and space to be both steeped in and to look beyond the surface of cinema.
Participants will attend workshops and screenings, interact with guest filmmakers, connect with other writers and directors and practice their art in an inspiring, scenic space. While this workshop will include elements of film production, the real focus is on accessing and pursuing creativity.
We've rented a big house in Segovia, north of Madrid, where we'll spend our days digging deep into the art of filmmaking while we also enjoy local food & wine, games, a swimming pool, gardens and shady places to relax and each other's company. We are especially excited for our 2023 retreat destination because this property was the location for the seminal 1973 film Spirit of the Beehive!

First of all, the three of us behind Wandering Cinema are friends... when we get together we tend to get carried away spinning the wheels of thought, pushing each other to be imaginative and even absurd in the creative scenarios and artistic interpretations we can pull from life around us.
One day in summer 2019 we got to talking about what really makes us feel alive and inspired, what is something we could make happen? And we had this idea to hole up in the beautiful countryside somewhere with a group of like-minded folks and dive deep into collaborative creativity together. We were all set to premiere Wandering Cinema Film Retreat in the summer of 2020 but then, well, you know what happened. So, we're thrilled to finally bring this dream to life in 2022!
Mika and Neal are both well-respected and passionate university-level film educators, and resourceful, persistent, and ultimately successful and inspired independent filmmakers. They share a combined total of over 30 years experience teaching and living film, and while their interests and areas of expertise occasionally overlap they have built their careers in completely different ways and bring to the table very divergent interests and skill sets. Kat owns, with her sister, a successful boutique travel business and is an expert at planning logistics and she will make sure everyone is comfortable, well fed and having a great time!
